The age of the temple is estimated to be over 1000 years old which can be noted in the engravings on the temple. The rulers of the Wodeyar dynasty were responsible for empowering the temple with lavishness. The deity worshipped in the temple is Cheluvapille Raya and is also known as CheluvanarayanaSwamy thereby earning its name.

The Mysore King, Raja Wodeyar, adopted the Sri Vaishnava faith in 1614 and donated all his estate received as a gift from Venkatapati Raya as well as the temple to Brahmins residing in Melukote. A bas-relief measuring 1.5ft in height on one of the pillars in the temple depicts Raja Wodeyar standing with folded hands signifying his devotion for the deity. The Vairamudi festival is a noted attraction of the CheluvanarayanaSwamy temple when the deity adorns the crowns gifted by the patron rulers such as Raja Wodeyar and KrishnarajaWodeyar III. The two crowns are named as Vairamudi or Vajramukta and Krishnaraja-mudi. It is interesting to know that another crown which was gifted as a present by some unknown person to the deity.
